    • 3.5 starsI don't read that many eerie books and for good reason, I'm not sure why this creepy little story which was unsettling at times had me in its grip. Reading in virtual darkness and practically alone especially when Josiah is having disturbing nightmares is not a good idea(whimpette here). It definitely sucked me in since I didn't get to bed until well past midnight, I had to know why the creature was zooming in on the boys. Lots of things are thrown in the mix, typical teens experimentin [...]

    • Vestige by K.J. Pedersen3.5 StarsReviewed for heartsonfirereviewsEighteen year old Josiah is in his senior year at High School in Hawaii. He has lived with his aunt and uncle since he was three years old, following the murder of his parent’s. They are wonderful people who loved him enough to adopt him and he has had a good life. He is living alone in their condo for his last year of school, while they are on an extended visit to the mainland to visit relatives. He is popular, good looking and [...]

    • 1.5 stars. Full review can be found here at The Armchair ReaderThis site is down. Here is the review. When it took me several days to read this book, I knew that something definitely was not working for me. The opening prologue was quite unsettling. It read like something from a horror novel, which is a genre that I avoid like the plague. This did not bode well. What follows is a book that seemed to me to be very confused as to what it wants to be when it grows up. Horror? Coming of age/coming o [...]

    • As I wrote Vestige, I will not be rating it.Vestige is the story of Josiah Alaka‘i Halden, a golden boy, whose life is slowly coming apart. Athletic, handsome, and college bound, everyone thinks he has it made. But he is haunted by impossible visions of the night his parents were killed fifteen years before. As the visions intensify, he fears he is falling victim to the family curse that has claimed the sanity and lives of its male members for generations. And then there’s the black iron ido [...]

    • This is a peculiar, strange book. It isn't exactly horror but there are some very scary scenes here (at least they were scary for me!). The main characters are teenagers in high school, so I kind of think this is a young adult novel, but there are a couple sex scenes. They're tastefully done, but not reading for younger teens. I love Makani and Caleb -- their scene was awesome!!! Anyway, this story kind of reminds me of the Point Horror novels released in the 1990s if only Stine, Hoh, and Cusi [...]
