    • A great collectionNow this was a good collection. Pitch black hardcore crime fiction. Exactly the kind I like. All noir, some bordering on horror. Every one a punch to the throat. Highly recommended.

    • A feast of stories here. Crime may be the thing they have in common, but those crimes are presented in diverse forms. There’s some revenge, reactions to infidelity, a little double and some triple-crossing along the way. The inhabitants include deranged characters, alcoholics, drug-crazed delusionists and a few cold-blooded reptiles who never miss a trick. The combinations allow for a subtle social commentary and an acknowledgement that much of what occurs is a directly or indirectly related t [...]

    • If you take a left past Thompson Boulevard (an off-shoot of Raymond Avenue) you'll come across Alec Cizak's Crooked Roads. Keep walking and you'll encounter people on the edge of things - victims and criminals alike, all of them taking a wrong turn, their lives as ill-fated as the lives they encounter, or, in most cases, intrude upon. The stories in this collection are as sharp as the prose. They have a Jim Thompson-esque feel about them, in the sense that they connect us with the darker side of [...]

    • This was sent to me in exchange for an honest reviewAll Due Respect has been publishing noir and hitting the genre repeatedly until it bleeds and smiles at them with crooked teeth. Yeah, really hard. They're busting up the Kindle tops with pride. This collection consisted of mostly lower middle class or poor people getting into super difficult situations or ending in death or embarrassment. Of course, since it is noir, those people have committed crimes or are in a situation where one takes place [...]

    • Published in 2015 by All Due Respect Books, Crooked Roads: Crime Stories by Alec Cizak features fifteen previously published short stories. Published in print and online the tales reflect flawed characters, crimes of various types, and situations where there are no easy answers.“The Space Between” starts readers off with a very short tale about the relationship, as well as the lack of one, between the cashier and the customer. She spoke in clichés, but for the narrator, his life is also ful [...]

    • Crooked, messed up and thoroughly f*ckedCrooked Roads is a collection of stories that explores all that is crooked, messed up and thoroughly f*cked in society. But what one doesn’t know and what one may not expect, is the way the author is able to flay the layers and characters of the stories to the point where it is personal. He isn’t writing about Ol’ Buck out in Rednecksville scratching his a$$ and spraying buckshot into the back of his neighbor’s trailer… He’s writing about you, [...]

    • Alec Cizak knocks it out of the park with this collection of short stories. These stories are about people that have already fallen almost as far as they can. Almost. We are presented with what feels like the last push. These are desperate characters, amoral characters, people who don't get what they want in the end. The stories are about people you probably wouldn't want to know. There's not a single dud in this collection, so it's hard to pick a favorite story--but I especially loved State Roa [...]

    • Real and rough and gritty, Alec Cizak shines the light in places you probably don’t want to see but won’t be able to look away from once you do. He writes a reality most people shy away from, but he shows the reader that that’s the thing about reality - it can come bite you whether you’re looking or not. For fans of hard-hitting crime fiction, this collection is a must. Check it out.

    • It's a great time to be a short-story reader. Alec Cizak is one of the sharp writers contributing to this boom. This is a strong collection with tentpoles in semi-rural Indiana -- the running thread with the toxic industrial town of Haggard is fascinating -- and Los Angeles. If I had to pick any two favorites, they would be "American Chivalry" and "State Road 53".

    • After the first few stories, I though I'd done the author a disservice by reading this immediately after finishing a brilliant story anthology (see review), but following a slow start to the collection it ramps things up as it goes bring plenty of dark noir tales with a ton of adultery, double crosses and murder. It was weird to start with a piece of flash fiction in my opinion, but we soon get to longer stories with "Colombus Day" recounting a tale of home invasion across a jagged timeline and " [...]

    • f you are looking for hardboiled, gritty fiction, you are simply not going to do any better than this. It is a fairly short collection, well-written, and easy to read. It is filled with life lessons such as that there is “nothing sexy about a woman doused in gore,” that you should never underestimate the stupid folks is capable of, and that life is mostly suffering and if you got a house instead of a trailer, you shouldn’t do much by the way of complaining. It is filled with violence and de [...]
