    • *3.5 stars*I want to say first and foremost, do NOT be put off by my rating of this book. I was really, really impressed by newbie author, Max MacGowan, who really put out a very well conceived, nicely plotted book that felt like the work of an experienced author. You go, Max! I think most readers will be super impressed and will ADORE this one.But then why only 3.5 stars, you might ask. Well, for me, 3.5 stars is a good rating, something between "I liked it" and "I really liked it." Really, whe [...]

    • 3.5 HEARTS--Rentboyly blind former soliderree guesses why I jumped at the chance to read thisAL: on the prowl for rentboy romances. I wonder if I could add this to my business card?Debut author Max MacGowan's "Taking the Long Way" does literally that. Apt title is apt. Old in the tooth hooker at the age of twenty-five, Rye gets an unexpected break from his rough life and forced 'retirement' by way of legally blind, sexually straight former soldier, Marcus. Marcus encounters Rye on the street and [...]

    • Take one rent boy, one functionally blind man, add a cross-country road trip, mix with some hot sexy times and enjoy!I liked the premise, the characters, and most of the story. It lost a little bit of steam for me in the third quarter, but picked up again by the end. After an IED explosion resulted in Marcus Townsend's loss of functional eyesight and a platinum plate in his head to keep his brain on the inside, he's had trouble with coming to terms with what his life is now. After Rye Bellamy, a [...]

    • A male escort looking for a way out of town and a mostly blind man needing to get to a specialist eye doctor in Atlanta take a long road trip out of California in a beat-up pickup truck. Marcus Townsend lost most of his eyesight during an IED explosion while deployed overseas with the Army. One honorable discharge and one metal plate in his head later, Marcus feels stuck, annoyed, and fighting new life. Frequent headaches are robbing him of what little sight he has left, and he resents anyone wh [...]

    • *** 4.25 Stars ***This book had all of the things I like best in stories that involve wounded warriors, rentboys, and road trips - sass and heart and a fair bit of "I've gotta do it my way." Of course, there was also the love and sense of redemption that hit me squarely in the feels. I thought it was a really strong debut novel and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

    • 3.5 star Review posted at Oh My Shelves BlogThis book was an entertaining gay-for-you with really likable characters. It left me feeling happy at the end. No fuss, no stress, just a nice, enjoyable quick evening read!Marcus Townsend was an army vet who was rendered functionally blind by an IED explosion while he was on tour in Afghanistan. He was discharged with a diagnosis of “Cortical visual impairment” which meant that Marcus received light and color transmission to his brain; however his [...]

    • 3.5 starsI know I've mentioned before that I'll be staying away from porn industry/rent-boy books, but this one has a rent boy AND a military man. I've never tried this exact combination before, so of course I couldn't stay away from it! While my mind wasn't blown, this new author's first published book was pretty good, people!Marcus is a proud veteran who's lost most of his vision while on a military tour, and while he hates to depend on anybody and feel like a burden, he's also functionally bl [...]

    • From the blurb we find out that Rye and Marcus end up finding each other at the right point in their lives to help the other out. Rye just lost his “job” by pissing off his pimp, and Marcus has lost faith in his VA doctor and is seeking a second opinion in Atlanta, but can’t fly due to his injuries.Marcus offers the chance to a new start to Rye in a new place if Rye will drive Marcus to Atanta. What the blurb doesn’t tell you is how amazing the journey is for these two guys.**I absolutely [...]

    • One day I'd really, really like to read a story where one character (view spoiler)[goes off soul-searching or whatever for months or for years, and when he finally decides to come back, the other character isn't waiting patiently for him like Penelope but has moved on. I quite enjoyed the book up to the last part of it. It was slow but in a good way, I liked spending time with the characters, getting to know them, seeing them get to know each other. But Rye's leaving for six months without a con [...]

    • Rating: 3.25 starsMale escort Rye Bellamy is looking for a way out. Any way out. He’s getting older, and clients are getting more dangerous. If he doesn’t find something better, he knows he won’t survive. He sees his chance in Marcus Townsend, a functionally blind Army veteran. Marcus, who refuses to accept his condition as immutable, has a shot at seeing a specialist who might be able to help him—but that doctor’s based on the other side of the country. When Rye and Marcus meet, they re [...]

    • “As long as your determination is at least as long as the road you travel, you will definitely reach your destination!” ~ Mehmet Murat İldanAs different as they may seem, Rye Bellamy and Marcus Townsend, from 'Taking the Long Way' by Max MacGowan, have one very important thing in common. They both want to get out of town. Rye is aging out of his profession. He's still very handsome and fit, but he's not a “sweet young thing” anymore. As a sex worker, that's the kiss of death. Marcus, a [...]

    • This was an enjoyable read, but with a few things that bothered me, so a 3.5 rating for me. I love stories about MC's on a road trip but the trip itself and sights seen weren't as well described as I'd have liked. I had no problems with how Marcus and Rye met, but then the relationship felt a little quick to progress after that. Given that neither of them talked much, it was hard to see how they were building a bond. Even given those issues, the book kept my attention and I really wanted to see [...]

    • 3.5 starsI liked that there's not much of a back story before the guys go on the road trip. I was excited to read this because it involves a rent boy and a straight guy. Welly one of those is the case. Marcus hasn't been with a man at all. He's never even thought about it before, but he goes from 0-60 extremely fast. However, he states that he's demisexual. After letting my disappointment go, I continued the story. I thought it was a light, angst-free read. It was nice that (view spoiler)[they d [...]

    • 4 stars from me. A slow burn romance between an injured Army veteran and an ageing male escortooh, and a road trip from California to Atlanta too!! A really well written story which has encouraged me to take a look at Max's new story Five-Sided Heartwhen I can get to it ;) Loved Celia and Prim, and the dogs of course.

    • I thought that this was a very solid debut novel! I really loved the characters. have their flaws, conflicts, and struggles, but together Rye and Marcus were great. They had wonderful chemistry together. This book has a lot of elements that I loveex-soldier with disability, hooker, road trip, adorable dogs, GFY, lots of emotion, and a happy ending!I look forward to reading more from this author, and I'd recommend this for sure!

    • It had all the ingredients for greatness, but the author forgot to set the timer and it got over baked. For me, it was just too long, the author could have shaved off maybe 20-25 pages easily. Loved the premise - rent boy, legally blind ex-veteran, too-wise-for-her-years-eleven year old and a road trip - my expectations were high but I was left a little disappointed, so it's 4* from me,

    • The is the beautiful story of Marcus and Rye and the journey of travel between themTwo completely different men they, have nothing in common at all except - they care. And do they care !You could see them getting closer and their love for each other growing at a very fast pace.Trust and hopefulness and finding your worth was all it took.A journey of finding themselves separate---- and with luck together. This was a book that I just melted into the pages and wished " life " didn't interruptConstant [...]

    • 3.5 StarsI really like stories about rentboys/porn stars that find their true love and are able to somehow make things work. For those reasons this one was right up my alley. It had a slow burn romance and MCs that seemed destined to be together, I fell hard for Rye and Marcus especially Rye. My only issue was the GFY troupe, I don't believe it's possible. Now give me a story were an MC has been attracted to men but never acted on it for one reason or the other then meets someone that blows his [...]

    • 4.5 Heart Review by CindyI’m a sucker for all kinds of things in this book. Ex-soldier? Check! Sex worker with a big heart? Double check. Road trip that changes your life? Three out of three and this one is a home run.Rye is a man who wants a better life. He maybe started out looking for it in the wrong place, but he knows that there has to be more to life than what he has if he can only figure out a way to get to it. And then Marcus wanders into his life and changes everything.Marcus is tryin [...]

    • Taking the Long Way by Max MacGowan4 starsM/M RomanceTriggers: Male prostitution, physical beatingsI was given this book for an honest review by Inked Rainbow ReadsThis story is about second chances, love, accepting your past, growing towards your future and allowing yourself to be vulnerable with someone who loves you.Marcus is struggling with the turn that his life has taken. Injured and hurting, he is trying to figure out where he goes from here. What he thought was going to be his career tur [...]

    • Review by The Blogger Girls. A rent boy and a disabled veteran, how could I resist? Rye is the rent boy getting out of dealing with a pretty rough life surrounding his profession. He’s had to deal with a shady pimp that he is finally able to make a break from. When he meets Marcus, a functionally blind veteran, he is unable to resist helping the man.Marcus is dealing with his blindness, though he lives a bit in denial about it. When he has a chance to see a specialist who might be able to help [...]

    • A Joyfully Jay review. 3.25 starsTaking the Long Way is the story of two men who want a new start and end up finding true love along the way. The book is well written and the author does a good job of capturing the exhilaration and exhaustion of a great road trip. I drive wherever I go and loathe flying, so I could really relate to the wanderlust that takes over when you’re on a long road trip and how emotionally freeing it can be. Unfortunately, the book had some pacing issues and tended to d [...]

    • Its not often you find a story with a unique story line, or unique to me, anyway.Several things I just loved about this story.First, Rye, he knows what he is, even when he starts on this road trip, he knows and it takes a lot for him to shake that if he ever does. I liked this, the fact that it wasn’t something that was turned on and off just because of geography.Marcus, injured in the war, with a specialist in Atlanta that could possibly help his vision but no way to get there. This was also [...]

    • Ageing rent boy and blind Army Veteran? Rye and Marcus were always going to be a fantastic couple. Add in a road trip, a touch of humour and thoughtful writing and I really enjoyed this story. Marcus and Rye are believable, well-crafted characters. Rye, the street rat, is getting too old for his job as a rent boy. At 25, he is lost and more than a little frightened when he considers the future. Marcus has returned home from the army after an injury that blinded him. If Rye is a little bit scared [...]

    • Three and a half Bright yellow colored stars for Marcus!I would say that i started this book with a little bit of "looking forward to" kind of emotion. And while it served me with a sense of peace at the end of the book, I was not so much excited about the slow pace of the book in the middle. I wanted it to have some interesting situations but really all i got was two "know-it-all" old ladies, "barely good" military friend and a dog which turned its tail at its first taste of comfort. Rye and Ma [...]

    • What a great 'unlikely pair' story. Loved this for many reasons, but mainly because I'm "hard of seeing" and the descriptions of Marcus's vision, while worse than my own experience, rang true. My only complaint is at the end. Getting such a license is glossed over, and earning a living using said license does not mean just aimlessly driving around. (I know exactly how that could've been written, too, exactly the destination.) HOWEVER, what did I immediately do? Well, I ordered Five-Sided Heart, [...]

    • This is a quietly powerful book. No, it doesn't have the sexual antics from beginning to end but what it is has fits the characters and their developing romance. These characters stayed with me long after I finished the book and I really believed their HEA. This isn't an "insert body part here" erotic romance but it had enough sexual intimacy to build on the deeply emotional intimacy between the leads. This was a new to me author so I'll definitely be on the look out for more by Max.

    • Wonderful love storyWhat a wonderful treat this was. Rye and Marcus were so perfect for each other but what a ride it was. I loved how two broken men, one by injury and one by life choices, came together. Such big hearts, stubborn, holding grudges, long angry silences, these are the things I loved about them. They were real men. And the loving was sweet, sexy, and hot. I'm definitely going to read this author again!

    • 2.5 starsThe plot had potential: an ageing rent-boy and a blind ex-soldier go on a road trip across the country. But the end result wound up being SO. INCREDIBLY. BLAND. I admit I skimmed heavily, and the only reason I finished this book is because I wanted to see how it all ends.
